A remote and sacred glacial lake trek in the Bhilangna valley, ascending past the Khatling Glacier to the mystical high-altitude tarn of Masar Tal at 4,670m.
Hidden in the rugged wilderness of the upper Bhilangna valley in Tehri district, Masar Tal is one of Uttarakhand's most isolated high-altitude glacial lakes. Resting at 4,670 meters near the Khatling Glacier, it is sacred to local shepherds and pilgrims.
Starting from Ghuttu and passing the traditional wooden village of Gangi, the route follows the roaring Bhilangna river through dense mixed forests of oak and bamboo to the high clearing of Chowki.
From Chowki, a steep climb over loose glacial moraines and boulder fields leads to Masar Tal. The lake's deep turquoise waters reflect the snow-clad pyramids of the Jogin and Kedar Dome massifs.
Trekkers are reminded to stay properly hydrated with a minimum of 3-4 liters of water daily. Uttarakhand forest regulations strictly forbid single-use plastics and campfires outside designated grounds. Always pack out non-biodegradable waste.
Along the ridgelines and summit ascents of Masar Tal Lake Trek via Khatling Glacier, trekkers are treated to sweeping views of legendary Garhwal & Kumaon summits:
