COMMON QUERIES

Char Dham Yatra FAQs

Clear answers to common questions about yatra dates, order of visit, fitness requirements, and travel logistics.

When do the Char Dham temples open and close each year?

Char Dham opening and closing dates vary by temple and year because they are determined annually by Vedic astrological calculations (Hindu Panchang) rather than fixed Gregorian calendar dates:

  • Yamunotri & Gangotri: Portals traditionally open on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya (late April or early May).
  • Kedarnath Dham: The exact opening date is determined annually on Maha Shivratri by the Rawal (Chief Priest) and BKTC astrologers at the winter seat in Omkareshwar Temple, Ukhimath.
  • Badrinath Dham: The opening date is formally calculated and declared on Basant Panchami by the Raj Purohit of the Tehri Royal Family at Narendra Nagar Palace.
  • Winter Closures: Shrines close after Diwali: Gangotri on Annakut, Yamunotri and Kedarnath on Bhai Dooj, and Badrinath in late November as announced by BKTC.

Always cross-verify the official schedule on the BKTC Official Portal (badrinath-kedarnath.gov.in) and Uttarakhand Tourism before booking your yatra tickets.

Why is the Yatra traditionally done in West-to-East order?
In Hindu philosophy, performing parikrama in a clockwise direction aligns with cosmic energy. Starting with Yamunotri (representing the sun and purification), continuing to Gangotri (salvation of ancestors), then Kedarnath (Lord Shiva, dissolution of ego), and concluding at Badrinath (Lord Vishnu, supreme enlightenment and preservation) forms the sacred spiritual progression.
How difficult is the Kedarnath trek and are pony/palki available?
The trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath is 16 km long and gains over 1,500 meters in elevation. It takes between 6 to 9 hours on foot. For senior citizens or those with fitness constraints, government-regulated ponies (approx. ₹2,500–₹3,500 one way), palkis/dolis, and pitthus (baskets) are readily available at Gaurikund and registered at Sonprayag.
What is the difference between Chota Char Dham and Maha Char Dham?
The original Maha Char Dham established by Adi Shankaracharya spans the four corners of India: Badrinath (North, Uttarakhand), Puri (East, Odisha), Rameswaram (South, Tamil Nadu), and Dwarka (West, Gujarat). The Chota Char Dham (or Himalayan Char Dham) refers specifically to the four holy shrines located within Uttarakhand's Garhwal Himalayas: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath.
Can I do Do Dham (Kedarnath & Badrinath) instead of all four?
Yes! The Do Dham Yatra (covering Kedarnath and Badrinath) is extremely popular for pilgrims with limited time. It can comfortably be completed in 5 to 6 days starting from Haridwar or Rishikesh, or in 2 days by helicopter from Dehradun.
Is biometric registration mandatory for children and senior citizens?
Yes. Every single individual traveling on the Char Dham circuit, regardless of age, must have a valid registration pass issued by the Uttarakhand Tourism Department. Senior citizens above 50 years are also strongly advised to undergo a basic health and cardiac checkup before attempting high-altitude treks.
