Sacred Origin of Holy River Ganga · Char Dham Himalayan Shrine
Nestled along the thundering glacial banks of the Bhagirathi River in the upper reaches of Uttarkashi district at an altitude of 3,100 metres (10,170 ft), Gangotri is one of the four holiest pillars of the sacred Char Dham pilgrimage circuit. Framed by colossal granite cliffs and aromatic forests of Himalayan cedar, Gangotri is the spiritual seat of Goddess Ganga on earth.
According to timeless Hindu mythology, it was here that King Bhagirath undertook severe penance for centuries to bring the celestial River Ganga down to earth to cleanse the ashes of his sixty thousand ancestors. To absorb the earth-shattering shock of her descent, Lord Shiva caught the torrent in his matted locks, releasing her as the gentle Bhagirathi.
The centerpiece of the shrine town is the majestic Gangotri Temple. Built of pure white granite stone in the early 18th century by the legendary Gorkha general Amar Singh Thapa, the temple features five golden kalash spires. During the yatra season, morning and evening Ganga Aartis fill the alpine canyon with the resonance of blowing conch shells, beating brass drums, and Vedic hymns.
Adjacent to the temple lies the sacred Bhagirath Shila, the holy stone slab where King Bhagirath sat in meditation. Just downstream, the river plunges into Surya Kund, a deafening vertical granite cauldron carved by millennia of rushing glacial water. Submerged beneath the riverbed lies a natural rock formation resembling a Shiva Lingam, clearly visible during winter when water levels recede.
A short forest walk upstream leads to the historic Pandava Gufa, a natural cave where the Pandava brothers are believed to have rested and meditated on their way to Mount Kailash. Gangotri also serves as the trailhead for the world-renowned trek to Gaumukh Glacier (19 km) and the ethereal high-altitude meadow of Tapovan (4,463m) beneath the pyramid of Mount Shivling.
The temple gates open every year on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya (April/May) and close after Diwali on Bhai Dooj, when the goddess’s silver idol is transferred to Mukhba village for winter worship.

Rain showers sweep across the valley, and Bhagirathi flows with ferocious glacial volume. Landslides can affect the highway between Uttarkashi and Gangotri.
Gangotri is completely snowbound and the temple remains closed. The idol of Goddess Ganga is worshipped at Mukhba village near Harsil with traditional winter rituals.
