Gateway to Yamunotri Dham · Rawain Valley Uttarkashi
Perched at an elevation of 1,220 metres (4,003 feet) along the gushing waters of the holy Yamuna River in the Uttarkashi district of Garhwal, Barkot is universally renowned as the primary gateway and staging base for the sacred Yamunotri Char Dham Yatra. Nestled in the picturesque and culturally distinct Rawain valley, Barkot offers a tranquil mountain retreat backdropped by the majestic snow-capped peaks of the Bandarpoonch massif (6,316m).
For centuries, millions of devout pilgrims embarking on the auspicious Char Dham pilgrimage — which traditionally begins at Yamunotri in the west and concludes at Badrinath in the east — make Barkot their first major multi-night halt. Located just 45 km from Janki Chatti (the motorable roadhead from where the 6 km foot trek to the Yamunotri temple begins), Barkot provides the ideal altitude and infrastructure for acclimatization and rest.
The town itself is surrounded by cascading mountain streams, verdant terraced hillsides, and sprawling apple and apricot orchards. In spring and early summer, the valley is adorned in delicate white and pink blossoms, while autumn sees branches bowed low under the weight of ruby-red Himalayan apples. Traditional Garhwali wooden architecture, featuring hand-carved balconies and slate roofs, adds timeless rustic charm to the town.
Beyond its spiritual significance as a pilgrimage hub, Barkot is a nature lover's haven. The roaring Yamuna river flows through deep gorges nearby, offering exhilarating spots for riverbank relaxation and photography. The surrounding forested hills are threaded with gentle trails leading to secluded villages like Naugaon, Purola, and Rajgarhi, where ancient local customs, wood-and-stone pagoda temples, and warm Pahadi hospitality flourish undisturbed.
From Barkot, travelers also gain easy access to the historical trekking wonderland of Har Ki Dun and the sacred Lakhamandal temple complex (where the infamous Mahabharata wax palace, Lakshagriha, was said to be constructed).
With its cool mountain breezes, dramatic vistas of icy summits glowing in the morning sun, and abundance of riverside ashrams and comfortable hotels, Barkot is the quintessential Himalayan sanctuary that sets the tone for an unforgettable mountain pilgrimage.

The valley receives heavy monsoon rains, causing the Yamuna to swell and turning the hills intensely green. Landslides are possible on the highway; travelers must monitor weather advisories.
Winter brings freezing temperatures and occasional snowfall on surrounding ridges. Yamunotri shrine is closed, and Barkot returns to a tranquil, sleepy mountain village blanketed in crisp quietude.

Carry Thermal Layers & Raincoat: While Barkot itself is pleasant in summer, the Yamunotri temple sits at 3,293m and can become very cold with sudden mountain rainfall. Carry rain ponchos and jackets.
