Birthplace of Holy Ganga · Sacred Confluence of Alaknanda & Bhagirathi
Perched in a dramatic natural mountain amphitheater at an altitude of 830 metres at the meeting point of Tehri and Pauri Garhwal districts, Devprayag (meaning "Godly Confluence") is one of the holiest river confluences on earth. It is here that the turbulent, turquoise currents of the Alaknanda River meet the serene, deep jade waters of the Bhagirathi River to form the sacred Ganga (Ganges).
From this geographical and spiritual milestone, the river is known worldwide as the Ganga as it flows through Rishikesh and Haridwar onto the northern plains. Standing on the stone bathing ghats at the Sangam, travelers witness the striking visual contrast between the rushing white-foamed Alaknanda and the tranquil emerald Bhagirathi as their dual colors intertwine in timeless harmony.
High above the confluence, commanding the stone town, stands the ancient Raghunathji Temple. Believed to have been consecrated by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century and rebuilt by the kings of Garhwal in the 10th century, it is one of the extremely rare 108 Divya Desams (sacred Vishnu shrines praised by the Tamil Alvar saints) located in North India. Legend recounts that Lord Rama performed penance here after slaying Ravana to atone for the sin of Brahmahatya.
Devprayag is also celebrated for scientific and traditional scholarship. Founded in 1946 by Pandit Chakradhar Joshi, the Nakshatra Vedhshala (astronomical observatory) perches on a nearby ridge, housing ancient astronomical manuscripts dating back to 1677 AD, historic brass astrolabes, sun dials, and powerful telescopes used to chart celestial motions.
The town itself is a living architectural marvel of old Garhwal. Narrow stone-paved staircases wind through traditional multi-tiered houses with intricately carved wooden verandas and slate roofs, clinging precariously to the vertical cliff faces above the rumbling river gorge.
Whether pausing for a sacred dip at the Sangam on the way to Badrinath and Kedarnath, exploring centuries-old stone sanctums, or meditating beside the roaring birthwaters of the Ganges, Devprayag radiates an aura of transcendental sanctity.
Warm valley days with brisk evening river breezes. Heavy pilgrim transit along the Char Dham highway; ideal for taking holy dips at the Sangam ghats.
Both rivers surge powerfully, and the Sangam becomes a thunderous torrent. Bathing requires great caution using security chains; lush green hills surround the gorge.
Crisp sunny mornings with cool crystal-clear waters. The visual contrast between the emerald Bhagirathi and turquoise Alaknanda is at its most striking.

Hold Iron Chains at Sangam: The river current at the confluence is deceptively strong and swift. Always hold onto the heavy iron chains securely anchored into the stone steps while bathing.
Footwear on Cobblestones: Walking between the suspension bridges, Sangam ghats, and Raghunathji temple requires navigating steep stone stairs. Wear comfortable walking footwear with good grip.
Suspension Bridge Views: Walk across the pedestrian suspension footbridge connecting the bus highway to the town for the most sensational aerial view of the two rivers merging.
Ideal Day Stop on Char Dham Highway: Devprayag is an essential 2 to 3 hour stop when driving between Rishikesh and Srinagar or Rudraprayag, with decent cafes, dhabas, and riverfront viewpoints.
Temple Dress Code: Dress modestly when visiting Raghunathji Temple. Photography inside the inner sanctum sanctorum of Lord Rama is strictly prohibited.
Sample Pahadi Singori Sweet: Devprayag bazaar sweet shops are renowned for fresh Singori (sweet khoya wrapped in aromatic Malu leaves) and piping hot jalebis.
Everything you need to know about Devprayag: the sacred Sangam, Raghunathji Temple, and travel logistics.
Devprayag is the celestial cradle where divine mythology and geography unite. Watching the gentle green waters of Bhagirathi embrace the turbulent blue torrents of Alaknanda to give birth to Mother Ganga evokes a profound spiritual awakening that resonates throughout every pilgrim’s journey.
