Mini Switzerland of India · Tungnath & Chandrashila
Affectionately hailed as the "Mini Switzerland of India", Chopta is an untouched alpine paradise cradled at an elevation of 2,680 metres in the Rudraprayag district of Garhwal. Surrounded by the dense, biodiverse woods of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, Chopta is celebrated for its undulating emerald bugyals (high-altitude pastures), whispering deodar and rhododendron canopies, and unhindered vistas of colossal snow peaks.
Chopta is world-renowned as the base camp for the trek to Tungnath, the third and highest of the revered Panch Kedar temples. Perched at an astronomical altitude of 3,680 metres (12,073 ft), this 1,000-year-old stone temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is believed to have been constructed by the Pandavas following the Kurukshetra war. The 3.5-kilometer paved stone trail from Chopta to Tungnath winds past blossoming rhododendron trees and grazing sheep with breathtaking drop-offs.
Just 1.5 kilometers above Tungnath rises the crowning crest of Chandrashila Peak (4,000 metres). Meaning "Moon Rock", Chandrashila commands one of the most sublime and dramatic 360-degree panoramas on the planet. From this lofty summit, gaze upon an amphitheater of celestial giants: Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, Kedar Dome, Bandarpunch, and Dunagiri standing against the blue firmament.
Down in the valley near Sari village (20 km from Chopta) lies Deoria Tal, an emerald freshwater lake perched at 2,438 metres. In early morning stillness, the towering four-pillared mass of Chaukhamba reflects with mirror-like perfection upon the calm waters, creating an iconic vista that has captivated poets and photographers for generations.
During spring (March to May), the surrounding woodlands burst into vivid riots of red, pink, and white rhododendrons (buransh), filling the mountain air with floral nectar. In winter (December to March), Chopta is buried under thick layers of powdery snow, transforming into an ethereal wonderland for snow trekkers and winter campers.
With no permanent concrete grid or commercial high-rises, Chopta operates primarily on solar energy and eco-camps, preserving its raw wilderness, clean mountain breezes, and brilliant star-studded night skies.

Chopta turns intensely vibrant and misty. Wild alpine flowers carpet the bugyals; rain showers can be frequent, so carry waterproof gear and check mountain roads.
Heavy snowfall transforms Chopta into a glittering winter wonderland. The trek to Tungnath becomes a thrilling snow trail; warm thermals and snow boots are essential.
