Cradle of the Chipko Movement & Sacred Confluences · Garhwal
Nestled along the roaring curves of the sacred Alaknanda River at an altitude of 1,300 metres, Chamoli (along with its twin administrative capital Gopeshwar) is the beating geopolitical and cultural heart of Central Garhwal. Blessed with sweeping views of terraced mountain slopes, ancient slate-roofed villages, and forested ridges, Chamoli is globally celebrated both as a sacred pilgrimage crossroads and as the birthplace of modern environmental activism.
It was in the tranquil forests of Chamoli in 1973 that courageous local women led by Gaura Devi, Chandi Prasad Bhatt, and Sunderlal Bahuguna clung to ancient ash and deodar trees to protect them from commercial loggers, igniting the world-famous Chipko Movement. This nonviolent crusade forever changed the paradigm of global community forest conservation.
Just 10 km above Chamoli town sits Gopeshwar, home to the magnificent Gopinath Temple. Constructed between the 8th and 11th centuries by Katyuri rulers, this towering stone shikara temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. In its sanctum courtyard stands an extraordinary 5-meter-tall metallic trident (Trishul) bearing ancient Sanskrit inscriptions, believed in legend to have deflected the arrows of Lord Kamadeva.
Chamoli serves as the essential gateway for travelers journeying northward along the NH-7 Char Dham highway. From here, roads branch off toward Badrinath Dham, Hemkund Sahib, the UNESCO Valley of Flowers, Joshimath, and the ski slopes of Auli, making it an indispensable resting and transit hub.
Adventure seekers venture from Chamoli toward Rudranath, the most challenging and mystically secluded of the sacred Panch Kedar temples, accessible via an epic 20-kilometer trek through dense rhododendron wilderness and sprawling bugyals. Nearby, the serene Anasuya Devi Temple and the roaring Atri Muni waterfall offer a deeply rewarding spiritual day-trek.
The vibrant bazaar of Chamoli pulses with pahadi life, filled with traditional woolens, aromatic mountain spices, copper utensils, and small teahouses serving hot chai to pilgrims from every corner of India.
