Historic Capital of King Ajaypal & Maa Raj Rajeshwari · Pauri Garhwal
Perched on a commanding ridge amidst dense chir pine and rhododendron woods at an altitude of 1,600 metres in Pauri Garhwal, Devalgarh is one of Uttarakhand’s most important yet serenely under-explored historical treasures. In 1512 AD, the great King Ajaypal of the Panwar dynasty shifted his royal capital here from Chandpur Garhi after successfully subjugating and unifying the 52 independent fortresses ("garhs") to forge the unified kingdom of Garhwal.
Devalgarh remained the prestigious royal seat of the Panwar monarchs until 1517 AD, when the capital was shifted to Srinagar on the Alaknanda riverbanks. Despite the transition, Devalgarh continued to serve as the spiritual heart of the Garhwal monarchy, housing the royal treasury, sacred shrines, and the ancestral tutelary deities of the kings.
The crown spiritual jewel of Devalgarh is the historic Maa Raj Rajeshwari Temple. Enshrining the royal kuldevi (tutelary goddess) of the Panwar dynasty, this ancient temple is steeped in Sri Vidya and Tantric traditions. The sanctum sanctorum houses a sacred Sri Yantra inscribed in stone, where elaborate royal rituals have been performed continuously for over five centuries.
High on the hilltop crest above the temple sits Som Ka Danda, an ancient stone platform where King Ajaypal once held royal court (durbar). From this elevated stone seat, panoramic vistas open across the rolling valleys of Pauri Garhwal, with the shimmering snow summits of Trishul, Chaukhamba, and Nanda Devi gleaming brightly on the northern horizon.
A short walk through village footpaths leads to the magnificent Gauri Devi Temple, renowned for its ancient Katyuri-style stone architecture and finely sculpted idols of Lord Shiva and Parvati. Devalgarh is also dotted with ancient naulas (subterranean stone water stepwells) featuring intricate mythological carvings that have supplied clean mountain water for half a millennium.
Just 19 km from Srinagar (Garhwal) and 18 km from the peaceful pine hill station of Khirsu, Devalgarh offers travelers an extraordinary journey back into the foundational epoch of Garhwal’s royal history.
Pleasantly warm days and cool evenings. Pine breezes sweep across the ridge; ideal conditions for exploring ancient temple architecture and stone ruins.
Hills turn deep lush green with drifting clouds. Stone shrines take on a mystical ancient aura; take normal precautions on mountain roads during rainfall.
