First Sacred Char Dham Shrine · Origin of Holy River Yamuna & Boiling Surya Kund
Perched high in the western reaches of the Garhwal Himalayas at an altitude of 3,293 metres (10,804 feet) in Uttarkashi district, Yamunotri is the first and westernmost sacred shrine of the revered Char Dham Yatra. Nestled against the rugged slopes of the Bandarpoonch peak, it marks the earthly seat of Goddess Yamuna, revered in Hindu tradition as the daughter of the Sun God Surya and the sister of Yama, the Lord of Death.
The actual physical source of the sacred Yamuna river lies about 1 kilometre higher up at the frozen, glaciated tarn of Saptarishi Kund near the Champasar Glacier at 4,421m. Because of extreme terrain and crevasses, the main temple was established at the base of the gorge, where the pristine mountain river emerges in crystal ribbons.
The iconic black marble idol of Goddess Yamuna is enshrined in the Yamunotri Temple, built in the 19th century by Maharani Guleria of Jaipur and subsequently rebuilt by the Maharajas of Tehri Garhwal after mountain avalanches. Devotees offer prayers here seeking purification from sins and liberation from the fear of untimely death.
Just outside the temple compound gush numerous natural thermal springs, the most famous being Surya Kund, where sulfurous waters boil at a scorching 88°C. Pilgrims tie raw rice and potatoes into muslin cloth pouches and dip them into the bubbling water; within minutes, the food is perfectly cooked and carried home as blessed prasad.
Before entering the sanctum, pilgrims perform prayers at Divya Shila, a massive reddish-brown rock pillar near Surya Kund that is traditionally anointed with sandalwood paste and vermilion.
The 6-kilometre walking pilgrimage from Janki Chatti climbs through dense birch and rhododendron woodlands, crossing rushing mountain torrents with continuous views of the snowbound pyramid of Bandarpoonch (6,316m). Filled with divine faith, thermal springs, and rugged mountain majesty, Yamunotri is an unforgettable spiritual awakening.

Heavy monsoonal rains drench the Yamuna valley, causing cascading waterfalls along the trail. Drive carefully and check landslide advisories.
The temple is buried under heavy snow. The idol of Goddess Yamuna is carried down to the nearby village of Kharsali for winter worship.
