Supreme 12th Jyotirlinga · Sacred Char Dham at 3,583m
Standing with monumental dignity at an elevation of 3,583 metres (11,755 ft) near the glacial snout of the Chorabari Glacier along the roaring birthwaters of the Mandakini River in Rudraprayag district, Kedarnath is the foremost and most spiritually revered of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. As a foundational pillar of both the All-India Char Dham and Uttarakhand’s Chhota Char Dham, Kedarnath is the ultimate pilgrimage of supreme spiritual devotion.
The epic origin of Kedarnath is woven into the Mahabharata. Seeking atonement for the sin of fratricide after the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas searched for Lord Shiva. Shiva disguised himself as a divine bull and grazed among cattle in the valley. When Bhima attempted to hold the bull, Shiva dove into the earth, with his divine hump (Pind) remaining permanently manifested at Kedarnath, while other parts emerged as the Panch Kedar temples.
The architectural wonder of the Kedarnath Temple is extraordinary. Constructed over a millennium ago by Adi Shankaracharya out of massive interlocking grey granite stone blocks joined with iron clamps without mortar, it has withstood countless avalanches, blizzards, and centuries of high-altitude freeze. During the catastrophic 2013 cloudburst, a colossal boulder known as Bhim Shila rolled down the mountain and lodged perfectly behind the temple, miraculously deflecting the raging wall of mud and floodwaters to leave the sanctum untouched.
Inside the sanctum sanctorum sits the sacred, natural triangular rock formation (Swayambhu Lingam) representing the hump of the celestial bull. The temple assembly hall (mandapa) is adorned with ancient stone statues of the five Pandava brothers, Lord Krishna, Nandi, and Virabhadra.
Perched on an adjacent ridge overlooking the valley sits the Bhairavnath Temple, dedicated to the guardian deity of Kedarnath who protects the sacred valley during the harsh winter months when the main temple is closed.
Higher up the glacial valley lies Gandhi Sarovar (Chorabari Tal, 3,900m), where Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes were immersed in 1948, and the challenging high-altitude trail leading across moraines to the sacred emerald waters of Vasuki Tal (4,135m).

Heavy monsoon rains sweep across the Mandakini valley. Treks from Gaurikund require caution for mud and landslide warnings; helicopter flights face frequent weather holds.
Kedarnath is buried under 10 to 15 feet of heavy snow. The temple is officially closed, and the deity of Lord Kedarnath is worshipped at Ukhimath Omkareshwar temple.
