Five Sacred Abodes of Lord Vishnu in the Garhwal Himalayas
Nestled high within the sacred river valleys and alpine ridges of the Chamoli district, Panch Badri refers to the revered circuit of five holy temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Foremost among them is Badrinath (also called Vishal Badri), one of India's prime Chardham pilgrimage shrines, flanked by four ancient sister sanctuaries: Yog Dhyan Badri, Bhavishya Badri, Vridha Badri, and Adi Badri.
According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Vishnu manifested in distinct divine forms across these five sanctums. At Yog Dhyan Badri in Pandukeshwar, King Pandu meditated and Lord Vishnu is worshipped in deep yogic dhyana posture. At Bhavishya Badri near Tapovan, prophecy foretells that Lord Badrinath will be worshipped here when mountains block access to Vishal Badri in the Kali Yuga. At Vridha Badri in Animath, the lord was worshipped as an elder by sage Narada before Badrinath was consecrated.
Completing the sacred pentagon is Adi Badri, a cluster of 16 ancient stone temples dating to the Gupta period near Karnaprayag. Undertaking the Panch Badri Yatra is considered one of the most merit-bestowing Vaishnavite pilgrimages in Hinduism, immersing devotees in sublime Himalayan nature and living Vedic rituals.
