Highest Shiva Temple in the World & Tritiya Kedar
Perched at a dizzying elevation of 3,680 meters (12,073 feet) amidst rugged mountain ridges and alpine bugyals, Tungnath is revered worldwide as the highest Shiva temple in the world and the third of the sacred Panch Kedar temples (Tritiya Kedar).
According to epic lore from the Mahabharata, when the Pandavas sought redemption from Lord Shiva after the Kurukshetra war, Lord Shiva took the form of a celestial bull and eluded them across the Himalayas. When the bull divided, his arms (bahu) manifested at Tungnath, leading the Pandavas to erect this ancient stone sanctuary.
The journey to Tungnath begins from the scenic meadow hamlet of Chopta (2,680m) via a well-laid 3.5 km stone-paved trail that winds through scarlet rhododendron forests and rolling alpine meadows. Continuing 1.5 km beyond Tungnath leads to the breathtaking Chandrashila Summit (4,000m), which rewards trekkers with a jaw-dropping 360-degree panorama of Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, Kedarnath, and Bandarpunch peaks.
Ideal for sightseeing, pilgrimage walks, and exploring forest paths with pleasant daytime sunshine and refreshing mountain air.
Transforming the hillsides into lush emerald landscapes with cascading mountain streams, blooming wild flora, and misty valley vistas.
