First Sacred Panch Prayag — Confluence of Alaknanda & Dhauliganga
Deep in the dramatic mountain canyons of the Chamoli Himalayas at an altitude of 1,372 meters, Vishnuprayag is the first and topmost of the sacred Panch Prayags (Five Holy Confluences) on the holy river Alaknanda. Here, the raging, ice-cold waters of the Dhauliganga River (descending from the Niti Pass along the Indo-Tibetan border) crash with deafening roar into the turquoise Alaknanda River descending from the Satopanth glacier and Badrinath.
Rich in sacred Vedic lore, Vishnuprayag is sanctified as the sacred spot where the celestial sage Narada meditated upon Lord Vishnu for thousands of years. Pleased by his devotion, Lord Vishnu manifested before Narada, leaving behind the sacred Vishnu Kund and blessing the waters as an eternal purifier of sins. Overlooking the roaring confluence stands an ancient stone Vishnu Temple constructed in 1889 by the celebrated queen Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore.
Situated just 12 km downstream from the mountain transit hub of Joshimath along the Badrinath National Highway (NH-7), Vishnuprayag is an essential spiritual stopover for pilgrims journeying to Badrinath Dham, Valley of Flowers, and Hemkund Sahib, as well as the trailhead for high-altitude treks to the mystical Kagbhusandi Lake.
