Crown of the Champawat hill basin, Kranteshwar Mahadev Temple stands proudly at the summit of Kurmanchal Hill at an altitude of approximately 2,100 metres. Known affectionately among locals as Kandev or Kurmapad, this ancient Shiva temple is intimately connected to the sacred legend from which the entire region of 'Kumaon' derives its historical name.
According to Hindu scripture and the Skanda Purana, it was on this very peak that Lord Vishnu took his second cosmic incarnation as Kurma (the celestial tortoise) to support the mountain Mandara during the churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan). Footprints carved into the ancient rock, revered as Kurmapad, mark this divine event. Later, Chand dynasty monarchs established a prominent Shiva temple here to honor Lord Kranteshwar as the guardian protector of the realm.
Reaching the temple involves a scenic drive followed by a brief uphill stone stair climb through whispering oak and rhododendron groves. From the summit terrace, visitors are treated to an unmatched panoramic panorama stretching over the rolling ridges of Champawat, the winding river valleys of western Nepal, and the glistening northern snow peaks.
Delightful sunny days with blossoming rhododendrons, wildflowers, and crystal-clear mountain horizons. Ideal for nature walks, photography, and escaping plains heat.

It is situated on Kurmanchal hill, where Lord Vishnu is believed to have incarnated as Kurma (the tortoise). The name 'Kumaon' is directly derived from this sacred hill.
The temple sits at an elevation of 2,100 metres (~6,890 feet), making it the highest vantage point overlooking the Champawat basin.

Yes, a motorable road leads to the base of the hill, from where a short stone stairway leads directly to the temple complex.
