Spiritual Sangam & Trekking Gateway · Kumaon
Situated at the sacred confluence (Sangam) of the holy Saryu and Gomti rivers at an elevation of 1,004 metres, Bageshwar is one of Uttarakhand’s oldest and most revered pilgrimage towns. Often revered as the "Varanasi of Kumaon", it is flanked by two protective hills — Nileshwar in the east and Suraj in the west — creating a serene natural amphitheater steeped in Vedic mythology.
The town derives its sacred name from the historic Bagnath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva in His feline manifestation as Vagheshwar (The Tiger Lord). Legend holds that Sage Markandeya once performed intense penance here; to facilitate the sacred flow of the Saryu river without disturbing the rishi’s deep trance, Lord Shiva manifested as a majestic tiger while Goddess Parvati appeared as a cow.
Originally constructed in the 8th century during the rule of the Katyuri kings, the current stone temple was rebuilt with intricate Nagara architecture in 1450 AD by the Chand dynasty king Laxmi Chand. The temple complex houses an extraordinary collection of ancient granite sculptures, including rare idols of Lord Shiva, Parvati, Kartikeya, Ganesha, and Surya dating back over a thousand years.
Every year during Makar Sankranti in mid-January, Bageshwar hosts the world-famous Uttarayani Mela. Historically a vibrant trans-Himalayan trading fair where Bhotia traders from Tibet and the high valleys bartered wool, borax, and mountain herbs for salt and grain, it remains one of the largest and most colorful cultural spectacles in Kumaon.
Beyond its deep spiritual heritage, Bageshwar is universally celebrated among mountaineers as the classic expedition base camp for eastern Uttarakhand’s premier trekking routes: the Pindari Glacier (3,860m), the Kafni Glacier (3,800m), and the rugged Sunderdhunga Valley. From Bageshwar, trekkers gather supplies, hire mountain guides, and drive toward Song, Kapkot, and Loharkhet.
With its tranquil river ghats where temple bells echo across morning mist, rich heritage of coppersmiths crafting traditional Pahadi vessels, and unhurried mountain rhythm, Bageshwar offers a deep and authentic taste of timeless Kumaon.
Warm days with refreshing river breezes. Ideal for undertaking the Pindari and Kafni glacier treks. Forests are vibrant and mountain trails are clear of snow.
Heavy rainfall causes the Saryu and Gomti rivers to swell dramatically. The surrounding hills become intensely green, though trekking routes are generally avoided during peak rains.
Crisp sunny winter days and chilly starlit nights. January hosts the grand Uttarayani Mela with folk dances, music, and local mountain markets. Perfect for exploring town temples.
