124 Ancient Stone Temples in Deep Deodar Woods · 8th Jyotirlinga
Nestled deep inside a mystical, narrow mountain valley carpeted with towering giant deodars along the sacred Jata Ganga rivulet at an altitude of 1,870 metres in Almora district, Jageshwar Dham is one of the most sublime architectural and spiritual treasures in all of Asia. Comprising an astonishing cluster of over 124 ancient carved stone temples, Jageshwar is revered as the mythological Darukavana (holy deodar forest of Lord Shiva).
The sacred Skanda Purana and Linga Purana celebrate Jageshwar as the eighth of the sacred twelve Jyotirlingas: "Nagesham Darukavane". It was here that Lord Shiva undertook deep tapasya while celestial sages meditated beneath the giant cedars. Consecrated by Adi Shankaracharya during his historic Himalayan renaissance in the 8th century, Jageshwar was patronized and built across seven centuries by the Katyuri and Chand dynasties.
The largest and oldest shrine in the main cluster is the monumental Maha Mrityunjaya Temple, dating back to the 8th century. Featuring an eye-shaped opening on its Shivalinga representing the third eye of Shiva, it is one of the few shrines in India where the sacred Maha Mrityunjaya mantra (conqueror of death) has been chanted continuously for over twelve hundred years.
Just a kilometer before the main complex lies the majestic Dandeshwar Temple, featuring the tallest stone spire in the entire valley, guarded by massive monolithic granite pillars. Across the stream stands the ancient Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) Museum, preserving more than 150 exquisitely sculpted stone idols of Uma-Maheshwar, Surya, and Chamunda salvaged from surrounding ruins.
Perched high on the mountain crest 8 km above the valley sits Vriddha Jageshwar (Old Jageshwar). This peaceful hilltop temple commands an unbelievable 360-degree panorama of the Greater Himalayas, where the snow summits of Trishul, Nanda Devi, and Panchachuli seem to float above the endless sea of pine ridges.
With the gurgling sound of the Jata Ganga, the rich scent of cedarwood incense, and moss-draped stone shikaras emerging from morning mountain mist, Jageshwar radiates an atmosphere of profound divine peace.

The sacred month of Shravan brings thousands of Shiva devotees. Mist swirls around mossy temple spires, creating an unforgettable mystical atmosphere.
Crisp sunny mornings and cold starry nights. Occasional snowfall covers the stone shikaras and deodars in white, creating an extraordinary sight.
