World’s Highest Gurudwara at 4,329m · Glacial Lake of Seven Snow Peaks
Perched like an ethereal crown in the high Himalayas at an astronomical altitude of 4,329 metres (14,202 ft) in Chamoli district, Gurudwara Sri Hemkund Sahib is revered across the globe as the highest Sikh place of worship on earth. Surrounded by an amphitheater of seven towering snow-clad peaks known as the Sapta Shring (7,100m), this celestial glacial sanctuary is enveloped in pristine ice fields, crystal-clear glacial waters, and profound spiritual stillness.
According to the sacred autobiographical scripture Bachittar Natak, it was here at the lake of "Sapta Shring" that the tenth Sikh master, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, in his previous incarnation as the ascetic Dusht Daman, performed deep, intense meditation to merge his soul with the Supreme Divine Creator (Akal Purakh).
Beside the sacred lake stands the unique star-shaped Gurudwara. Designed by architect M.S. Siali and engineered out of stone, reinforced concrete, and aluminum to withstand crushing winter blizzards, its distinctive pentagonal roof mimics an upside-down lotus. Inside the sanctum, the continuous melodious chanting of Gurbani Kirtan and the warm, comforting aroma of hot langar and spiced tea provide transcendental solace to weary pilgrims arriving after a grueling climb.
Lapping gently against the Gurudwara steps is the emerald-blue glacial water of Hemkund (Lokpal) Lake. Fed by melting glaciers from Hathi Parbat and surrounding sentinels, the lake is so crystal clear that smooth river pebbles are visible meters below the surface. Male pilgrims perform a ritual holy dip in the freezing waters before entering the shrine, while a separate covered bathing area is provided for women.
Adjacent to the Gurudwara stands an ancient stone shrine dedicated to Lord Laxman (Lokpal Temple). Mythological lore recounts that Lord Laxman meditated here beside the lake to regain his strength after being wounded by Meghnad in the epic war of Lanka.
Along the rocky glacial moraines surrounding the lake flourishes the legendary Brahma Kamal, Uttarakhand’s state flower. This celestial pale-yellow alpine bloom blossoms exclusively at altitudes above 4,000 metres during monsoon, infusing the thin mountain air with divine fragrance.

Slopes surrounding the lake turn lush with wild alpine moss and blooming Brahma Kamal. Rains are frequent; morning ascents with good waterproofs are recommended.
The lake is completely frozen solid, and the Gurudwara is buried under 15 to 20 feet of snow. The shrine is officially closed, returning to complete Himalayan freeze.
