Adi Shankaracharya’s Northern Jyotirmath · Winter Seat of Badrinath
Perched on an elevated mountain ridge high above the sacred confluence of the Alaknanda and Dhauliganga rivers (Vishnuprayag) at an altitude of 1,890 metres in Chamoli district, Joshimath (historically known as Jyotirmath) is one of the four supreme cardinal monastic institutions established in the 8th century by the great philosopher Adi Shankaracharya.
Representing the northern seat (Uttaramnaya Matha) responsible for preserving the Atharva Veda, Joshimath is the undisputed spiritual and logistical gateway to the high Garhwal Himalayas. The town commands breathtaking vistas across the deep Alaknanda gorge toward the colossal snow monolith of Hathi Parbat (Elephant Peak, 6,727m) and Ghori Parbat rising against the northern sky.
At the heart of the town stands the sacred Narsingh Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his fierce half-man half-lion avatar. When heavy winter snowfall closes the gates of Badrinath Dham in November, the sacred Utsav Murti of Lord Badri Vishal is brought down in a grand palanquin procession to this temple, where daily pujas are conducted throughout the six winter months.
Nearby sits the legendary Kalpavriksha, an ancient mulberry tree scientifically estimated to be over 2,500 years old with a trunk circumference exceeding 21 metres. It was beneath the sheltering boughs of this living botanical marvel that Adi Shankaracharya attained enlightenment (Jyoti) and penned his celebrated commentaries on the Sanatana Dharma scriptures.
In addition to its profound monastic heritage, Joshimath is the lower boarding terminal for the world-renowned Auli Ropeway. Spanning 4.2 kilometres and ascending 1,000 vertical metres over dense oak and pine canopies, this bi-cable aerial tramway connects Joshimath directly to the snow-covered ski slopes of Auli in just 22 exhilarating minutes.
From mountaineering expeditions to pilgrim caravans heading toward Badrinath (45 km), Hemkund Sahib, and the Valley of Flowers, Joshimath remains the beating pulse of Garhwal adventure and faith.
